Stiffkey Freshes is a unique and beautiful natural wetland located in the North Norfolk coast of England. Situated between the Blakeney Point and Wells-next-the-Sea, Stiffkey Freshes is part of the North Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is an area of marshland and tidal mud flats, bounded by salt marshes, grassland and dunes. In addition to its beautiful scenery, the area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including a number of rare and endangered species.

The area was first recorded as a marsh in 1450, when it was noted in the Doomsday Book. The marsh’s name is believed to have come from the Old English word ‘stig’, which means a marsh, and ‘key’, which means a creek. Over the years, the marsh has been used for various purposes, including a source of food, grazing land, and a refuge for ships during storms.

The area is an important habitat for many species of birds, including grey herons, redshanks, dunlins, avocets, and curlews. It is also home to an array of wild flowers, including marsh marigolds, water forget-me-nots, and sea lavenders. In addition, the area provides a habitat for many other animals, including otters, water voles, and bats.

The Stiffkey Freshes is also an important breeding ground for many species of fish, including flounder, eel, and bass. The tidal mud flats are also a popular spot for shellfishing, with a variety of cockles, mussels, and other shellfish being found in the area.
